Word pack

Football Imposter Game

A pack of 48 players and clubs, already selected in the generator below. Hints are a place or a country. They are not shirt numbers, and they are not the answer.

The same setup is on the generator if you arrive there with Football chosen. Every name in the pack is also in the word list.

House rules for a match night

  • Clues stay inside football: a city, a position, a competition, or the way a crowd sings. Do not say the surname, the name on the shirt, or the club’s usual nickname if that club is the secret.
  • No shirt numbers. They are either a giveaway or a wrong guess, and they date quickly.
  • One clue each, then a vote, before anyone starts listing a whole squad. A squad list is how the word leaks.
  • In the UK, call it football. A US table can call the sport soccer. The secret is still a player or a club, not the sport. The separate Sports list is the one that contains the word Football.
  • Hint mode shows a place or a country from the pack. The imposter still does not see the name. Crew see the name and do not see the hint.

How a clue sounds

If the secret is a London club, “North of the river” might fit one of them and not a club from another city. If several London clubs are in the pack, that clue is broad, which is why those hints sit in a harder cluster on the word list. A better crew clue adds something only teammates would share, without saying the name.

If you are the imposter and your hint is a country, do not treat the country as the player. Several names can share it. Talk about the game in general until someone else has been specific, then follow their shape.

A squad the site does not have

Sunday-league sides, a workplace team, or a player who is not in the 48 are Custom words. Type one name per line. A hint can follow a pipe, for example a town. That list stays in this browser and is not added to the public pack. You need five different lines before that list will deal.

Other themes, including food for a kitchen table, are on packs. The full rules of the vote are on how to play.

Football pack questions

Is this a soccer word game?

It is the same pack. In the UK the game and the category are called football. In the US the sport is often called soccer. The secret words are players and clubs, not the names of sports. Sports is a separate list, and the word Football on that list means the game itself.

What does the imposter see in this pack?

With hints off, a blank card and the category name Football. With hints on, a place or a country from this pack, such as a city or a nation, and still not the player or the club. Crew see the name and do not see that hint.

Can we add our own club or a Sunday-league side?

Yes. Choose Custom words in the generator and type one name per line. You can add a hint after a pipe character. That list stays in this browser. It is not uploaded, and it is not added to the public word list.
